Vredestein Quatrac 5: An Overview

The Vredestein Quatrac 5 tire is manufactured in the Netherlands by Apollo Vredestein. The corporation creates tires for commercial and passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, farms, and industrial.

Auto Bild Allrad, a German publication, named the Quatrac 5 as the top all-season tire for SUVs in 2019. The publication commended the balance and precision handling coupled with a desirable price point. However, the Quatrac 5 really edged out the competition during wet road tests, especially with short braking distances.

Vredestein manufactured the Quatrac 5 specifically to perform well in wet conditions. The company used a rubber compound with a high silica concentration to give the tires all-season properties without compromising the driving experience on dry roads.

One of the key selling points for this tire is the reasonable pricing for the versatility of an all-season tire. Plus, every Quatrac 5 tire comes with an unconditional warranty of 1 year, including non-repairable punctures, tire damage from impact and accidental damage. The company also offers a manufacturer warranty of 5 years or 45,000 miles.

Though Auto Bild tested the tires on SUVs, Vredestein Quatrac 5s fit a wide variety of vehicles. A few cars listed are Audi (A3, A4, and A6), Dodge Dart and Stratus, Lexus (E5 and Es), Mazda CX3, and Peugeot. It is important to remember you have the correct rim size before purchasing.

Vredestein Quatrac 5 Full Review

Let’s take a deeper dive into what makes the Vredestein Quatrac 5 stand out from the field.

Performance

The Vredestein Quatrac 5 has a quality, all-season design that is impressively responsive, well-balanced, and handles braking well. Unlike many of its all-season competitors, the Quatrac 5 performs well on dry roads, but it truly outshines the rest of the class in wet conditions.

With resistance to hydroplaning, these tires can grip wet roads very nicely because of the tread pattern that was made for efficient water drainage. Like most all-season tires, the Quatrac 5 wasn’t intended to maneuver through heavy snow and ice, but it maintains traction exceptionally well in light snowfall and rain.

Under normal conditions, these tires are intended for areas that do not receive abundant snowfall.

Also, the ride quality is impeccable, although Apollo could improve the noise level a bit. It is not the loudest tire tested but can be intrusive while driving. The Quatrac 5 is not meant for off-road driving as large stones can damage the tires. However, it is acceptable for short journeys on smooth, dirt surfaces.

The 45,000-mile treadwear warranty is lower than other tires in the same class. Usually, the treadwear warranty for all-season tires is about 70,000 miles. It also has a lifespan warranty of 8 years rather than the 6 years you usually see with other tires in its class.

Handling

The Quatrac 5 breaks away from the competition in handling. It’s smooth and comfortable on dry roads but offers exceptional performance in wet conditions.

Light snow, rain, and even a little ice are no match for the unique treads and 3D grip claws that provide extra traction and resist hydroplaning. While these tires don’t give drivers a license to be reckless in wet conditions, they do offer a degree of protection and support, even for short braking distances.

Noise and Comfort

One of the few complaints about Quatrac 5 tires is the noise level. They aren’t as loud as some of the competition, but they could be quieter.

If you are used to extremely quiet tires, you might notice a difference with the Quatrac 5. Of course, noise is often easy to overlook for a smooth ride, and these tires offer that in spades.

Durability

Though they aren’t meant to off-road, the Quatrac 5s are surprisingly durable in average road conditions. These tires feature tread wear indicators merged into the treading so that you can easily keep tabs on the wear.

The Quatrac 5 has a high rolling resistance, so there is more energy loss as the tires roll, increasing the required rolling effort. This issue likely contributes to a shorter lifespan on the tire.

It’s important to note that the manufacturer only offers a 45,000-mile warranty on these tires, and Consumer Reports lists typical tread life at 50,000 miles. Compared with most other models in class, this shorter tire life is a drawback. However, the shorter life span likely contributes to the desirable price tag.

Pricing

With a moderate price point starting at around $100.00, these tires seem like a steal. And they are, considering quality and stability, an excellent choice if you live in the right environment.

Recommendations & Final Thoughts

The Vredestein Quatrac 5 tire is an affordable all-season tire that handles rain and light snow exceptionally well. It is a premium brand for passenger cars, though it can perform well with SUVs, vans, and pick-ups that don’t venture into off-road conditions.

The Quatrac 5 topped the class in 2019 but was since replaced by the Quatrac Pro, which offers notable improvements and a higher price tag. Drivers who see a lot of light snow and rain can benefit from the affordability and reliability of the Quatrac 5, but if you can afford it, the Quatrac Pro is a step up with slightly better performance across the board.
